In 2008 Lorin Parker modified the Phantastron circuit into a functional musical instrument. This circuit was originally developed in 1942 by the British army for use in radar systems.
Although it has its own acoustic character, the phantastron is similar to the trautonium (developed in 1928) with its ribbon controller and formant filters. The instrument on the picture employs 10 formant filters.
In july 2009 the Stichting Limburgse Componisten published the first CD dedicated to the phantastron. A concerto and 2 other works by Hans Kockelmans.
